Earlier this month I was lucky enough to have a look through the brand new Viking Orion while she was docked at Portside in Brisbane.

What a beautiful ship! Light woods, leather, deerskin throw rugs and stonework make the public areas feel like a Scandinavian lodge high in the Arctic forests of Norway. Viking culture is celebrated with tapestries depicting ancient stories and folklore, with a small museum dedicated to showcasing the real Viking history.

There are touches of Scandinavia throughout the ship with lichen and moss covered garden that looks like a beautiful rug under the main stairs in the atrium. There is a spa featuring hot tubs, saunas and a snow grotto with real snow so you can invigorate yourself with a roll in the snow followed by a plunge into a hot tub in true Nordic style.

The cabins are light-filled and spacious, complete with nice size bathrooms, light woods, and leather throughout. Cabins include a mini-bar, private verandah, 42-inch flat screen TV’s, heated bathroom floors and anti-fog mirrors along with twice-daily room service.

My favourite part of any ship is the forward lounge/bar area, and the Explorers Lounge on the Orion is one of the best. With a great wine list and fantastic looking cocktails, the lounge is complete with library and planetarium along with the stunning floor to ceiling windows.

Coming a close second and third for my favourite places on the ship is the aft infinity edge, cantilevered pool and the beautiful all-weather winter garden that is covered in artworks featuring Nordic mythology and images from the many places Viking cruise to.

For those looking for relaxed all-inclusive luxury, Viking Orion will tick all your boxes with a shore excursion included in every port, free Wi-Fi, speciality restaurant dining at no charge, free self-serve laundry and drinks with lunch and dinner (beer, wine and soft drinks). Everything is taken care of, and for those who want a complete beverage package, a Silver Spirits beverage package can be added for just USD$20 per day, making the all-inclusive fare, genuinely all-inclusive.
